I’m about to explain the single most important factor in getting positive results from any type of workout or exercise.
The average person who works out at the gym or even at home looking to lose some weight and tone up probably does 3-4 sets of anywhere from 8-10 reps for 4-6 resistance training exercises, where they lift the weight and lower the weight. Then hop on the treadmill or cardio machine for 20-30 minutes to burn some calories. Then over time with the weighted exercises they try to do more reps with the same weight, fight to increase the weight or run faster or longer.Sound familiar? It does to me because this is how I trained and struggled for years, until I discovered the biggest workout mistake…

This common training principle is called progressive overload and sure it works to lose a few pounds at first, but only for a few weeks giving the illusion of progress. We then know it quickly comes to a screeching halt where your body quickly plateaus in weight loss and strength. The heavier the weight you try and lift or the faster and longer you try to run, the riskier your workout becomes and the less impact it has on your metabolism and the more impact it has on your joints. This type of training sets you up for failure and injury from the start.

The Secret Behind MTT-20™ Workouts

Instead of just using the old-fashion and over-used method of lifting and lowering weights, with MTT-20 ™, by manipulating how you hold (isometric phase), lower (eccentric phase) and lift (concentric phase), your own bodyweight you will highly increase the time under tension and metabolic afterburn you achieve from each new workout, all without the painful joint stress lifting heavy weights cause. Why Time Under Tension Matters
Time under tension just refers to how much time the muscles being worked are under stress. Basically, if you lift a weight and it takes you 30 seconds to complete that set, you have a total time under tension of 30 seconds. This time under tension factor then is also directly related to the tempo that you’re using. If you’re using a tempo of 2-1-3 for instance, which means it takes you 2 seconds to perform the lifting part of the movement, you’ll take a 1 second pause at the top, and then you lower the weight back down over a 3 second time period, your total time under tension would then be 6 seconds per rep. Complete 10 reps total and you’ve just achieved a ‘TUT’ of 60 seconds.
Now, to calculate the total time under tension, you would then multiply your total TUT per set by the total number of sets you’re going to perform of that exercise, and then add together all the values for each exercise of your session. That then gives you the time under tension for the workout.
Sound a little confusing? Well, it is!

A Greater Metabolic Response
The first big benefit you’ll get from doing these MTT-20 ™ workouts that focus on time under tension times sets instead of reps is an enhanced metabolic response. The more time under tension you’re placing your muscles under, generally the greater your natural growth hormone release will be. Besides being the anti-aging hormone, your growth hormone is a fat burning hormone that acts directly on your fat cells telling them to release stored fat for energy.
Additionally, if you have a large time under tension combined with our progression phases of different daily and monthly workouts, you’ll also really jumpstart your metabolism and prevent plateaus since you are keeping your muscles challenged, all while creating quite a high degree of micro-damage in the muscles, therefore this will cause the body to expend more calories and burn fat once the workout is finished.

When metabolic resistance exercise is performed at a higher intensity in a specific way, the respiratory system and glycogen stores (sugar stored in your muscles) are challenged and depleted which in turn elevates your resting metabolism for many hours after exercise. Which means more calories are burned even at rest, also known as Afterburn.
Some studies show a metabolic elevation up to 42 hours after just one workout! The secret to this exercise method’s extreme effectiveness is the ability to increase your body’s metabolism far beyond its normal state. More specifically it is referred to as E.P.O.C. otherwise known as “excess post exercise oxygen consumption.” EPOC represents the process your body goes through in which energy is used to recover from exercise.
When you finish exercising, it takes time and energy for your muscle cells to return to resting levels. Energy is also needed to replenish depleted glycogen, protein and fat stores, and to remove accumulated cell waste. The more rebuilding that needs to be done, the greater the rate of EPOC, which in turn, means more calories from your body’s fat stores are being burned after your workout. While the primary factor in determining EPOC is exercise intensity and duration, there is also time under tension to consider. That’s where other forms of high intensity interval-training fails in comparison to MTT-20™. All of these factors working together creates the perfect metabolic storm for both increasing muscle definition and losing stubborn pounds and inches in a lot less time than traditional gym workouts and even regular interval training.
